               WORLD LAUGHTER DAY

As people all over the world celebrate “World Laughter Day” today on May 4th times plus smilingly reaches out to people to find out their views on uninhibited laughter.

World Laughter Day takes place on the 1st Sunday of May of every year. The first celebration was in 1998 when Doctor Madan Kataria founded the worldwide Laughter yoga movement in Mumbai to promote World peace and to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. According to laughter yoga, laughter is a positive and powerful emotion that has all the ingredients required for individuals to master themselves and to change the world in a tubular way.

Ruchi Varshney says the celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. Its popularity has grown exponentially with that of the Laughter yoga movement now counting 1000’s of laughter clubs in more than 72 countries. The “laughter” is physical in nature, and does, not necessarily involve humour or comedy. Laughter is easily stimulated in a group when combined with eye contact, childlike playfulness and laughter excercises. “Fake laughter quickly becomes real. Laughter yoga brings more oxygen to the body and brain by incorporating yogic breathing which results in which results in diaphragmatic breathing. Laughter yoga is based on the concept that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter-physiologically and psychologically the benefits are identical”, says Pancham singh a yoga teacher.

T.v. shows on comedy nights with Kapil have become very popular as it  suceeds in tickling the funny bones of the audience which is the most difficult task. Nitin Gupta a child artist who performs comedy shows shares that “the safest art practised by me is laughing at my ownself like joker mera naam. He said that we might appear to do our acts with effortless ease, but there is lots of research and long hours of practice involve before we go for the final laughter shows. The latest topics are picked up so that the audience is able to related to them. A practising homeopath by profession, Dr. Chakresh Kumar, has recently started a laughter club in his locality, after reading about the benefits of laughter therapy.

The club has about 18 members, who enjoy morning walk, jogging, Ramdev’s yoga exercises all out in the open company Bagh. In the end we all laugh aloud continuously for a minute or two. By doing so, we have a dual benefit, one is of reducing tension and the other is that our cardiovascular and respiratory systems get rejuvenated.

“Humour is not just an opposite of distress, but also its antidote”, says doctor Chandni Kapoor. She further added that by secreting mood enhancing hormones such as serotonin and nor adrenaline, a good laugh contributes to the feeling of wellbeing and happiness. After all, it is well known that the art of medicine consists of amusing the patient, while nature cures the diseases.”

Brij Ghat and Tigri Ghat of Ganga River at the distance of  about 65 km from Moradabad  citiy on national high way 24, are  full of  capacity with devotees from far and near by villages of  the district .  A bathing fair is being held here on the full- moon day of kartika in the month of November  every year when about seventy lakh devotees come to have a dip in the river Ganga which is considered the Holy River of Hindus.  At the time of Fair the entire region of breach becomes a city of tents. It fascinates a lot the people to stay there for some days in the light of moon. The series of stalls are arranged for essential commodities , toys, cosmetic goods etc . The historical Garh Ganga Fair is being  sponsored by Zila  Parishad  At Garhmukteshwar.   The name of the place is derived from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva, dedicated to the goddess Ganga who is  worshipped here in four temples.  One of the temple is situated on top of the hill it is dedicated to Ganga Maiya and Lord Brahma. Once Ganga used to flow here. Thus Garhmukteshwar is very ancient place of Ganga Snaan whose description comes in Vedas and Mahabharat . The Ganga Devi Temple is situated near the road side. The devotees reach the temples early in the morning , in the clear and luminous light of the morning sun , they worship Goddess Ganga . The ‘ Aarti’ is performed by waving buring camphor and sandalwood around the images in circular movements. The Pundits, blow their conch-shells, ring their bells and perform the ‘Puja’ prayer service by reciting verses from the Holy Scriptures. Devotees offer flowers, fruits , sweets and milk.

Tigri Ganga Snaan fair has been inaugurated on 10.11.2013  by Panchayati Raaj state Minister Shree Kamal Akhtar in presence of District Magistrate Shri Bhavnath and Smt. Kamlesh Arya, president Zila Panchayat. The State Minister has declared that Brij Ghat and Tigri Ghat of Ganges shall be developed and designed as the Ghat at Haridwar with suitable  facilities for devotees. The Pilgrims from Moradabad  come to perform rituals in groups of family members and relatives singing in folk the song of devotions (Bhajan) . They install tents for number of days and worship Ganaga Maiya performing Deepdan (floating Deepak) in Ganges Stream while taking bathe. There is a popular belief that the longer the camphor burns on the betel leaves , the sooner the wishes are granted. Devotees believe that wishes made faithfully and sincerely on this day in Ganga ,are fulfilled by the river Goddess, who is kind to  her worshippers. They usually observe a fast on this day, abstaining from taking anything with salt until noon.  Although the older generations continue to offer prayers and perform ritual ceremonies in the Ganga stream every day of their stay there beginning  since early morning  till evening ;  the festival it self is a joyous occasion for collective  picnicking and merry making for children. Cultural programmes are organised for the entertainment of the people . Ganga Snaan is now celebrated as an occasion for a family outing as much as for its religious significance.

Ganga Snaan is adopted as a  festival of faith, tradition and trust in Hindu Culture  which goes beyond the individual and embraces the entire human race. It does not include simply bathing in the River to clean the body, but bathing with the purpose to purify mind and the soul. This purification of Soul takes place by offering prayers, by sacrifices, by giving charity , by having good and noble thoughts for friends and foes  equally. Mythological story goes like that  The  River Ganga came down on the earth to purify sinners’ souls.  Since  human life is full of errors and sins, but to continue living in sin is wrong and reprehensible. The festival of Ganga Snaan comes to remind us of the need for sincere repentance and fresh resolution for the same. The river Ganges is known as Mother Ganga as the sacred river of  India . As Mother fosters  her children, same way the Ganga Maiya  nurture the devotees.  On the day of Kartik Purnima  when devotees take bathe , they vow not to be influenced by evils in life. Those who have committed errors, must take a vow not to repeat their mistakes. The ‘Puranas “ (sacred Texts of Hindus) declare that the sight, the name and the touch of Ganga washes away all sins; and that bathing in Ganga bestows  spiritual blessings of the high order.  The ‘Gangajal’ the water of Ganga river is held so sacred that with this in hand no Hindu would dare commit a sin or speak a lie.  The belief  goes  that the Ganga river is the imagery of crossing from the world of common mortals---the world of  ignorance – to the World   of   Enlightenment. It represent a state of transition for the soul.  By taking a dip in Ganga water the devotees symbolically wash away their old selves  and are born anew, fresh and enlightened.   It is believed to  provide salvation  to mortals.

      International Day of Older Persons

International Day of Older Persons falls on October 1, 2015 and focuses on the challenges faced by senior citizens in our society. Radios, televisions or newspapers publish interviews with them on various issues such as contributions they made to create a better community.  TP talks to the young people as well as the older persons at Moradabad on contemporary issues related to inter-generational cooperation and facilities to them.

In many countries the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. With the development of technology and medical caring facilities, people now enjoy an extended expectancy of life. The percentage of persons with above 60 years of age has been enhanced dramatically which is as a direct result of longevity and social supports to them. This trend is not only restricted to urban areas, but also in rural areas where infrastructure is still missing. However, what aging population brings to us still remains more talked about.  In some families these aged persons are seen taking responsibility of looking after young ones including sending and picking up kids from schools, arranging for their meals and other housework. Thus their contribution towards the family or the society as a whole can never be neglected. Hence UN General Assembly propagated theme for this year as ‘sustainability and Age inclusiveness in the urban environment. It focuses on the impact the senior people they have on the urban areas and in return the positive outcome of the environment for them.

The elderly persons in India account for more than 9 percent of the total population as per the census in 2011. This demographic situation seems to point out a very unstable condition for the older persons in terms of their ability to enjoy the right to life with dignity. They could be expected to lead a fairly healthy life and perform their moral duties giving care to others. The people of the 80 plus age group would require critical social and medical healthcare support including formal and informal care. The growing incidence of elder abuse and severe splits in the multigenerational household has forced many of elder persons to abandon their family homes. Some of them become shelter less due to a nuclear family pattern.

A new way of life “peer group participation” is being developed by the old persons and it appears to be taking place in many parts of urban India; Old Age Homes of various types are preferred by alternative  option for many old persons with or without survival resources. In the Vedic Vradh Ashram at BudhiVihar, one can find old persons who belong to middle class families.  Moreover the vision of alternate shelter for older persons is also developing as Group housing for them with no physical barriers to mobility, health care and nutritional support, recreational services, easy and safe accessibility to shopping complexes, parks etc.

Anand Sharma , practicing advocate says, “As the cases of elder person’s abuse are raising more in the rural than urban areas; the Maintenance and Welfare Act for Senior Citizens 2007 is yet to percolate to the last person. Therefore, a commission should be formed at national level which can define the roles to be played by NGOs, local police for redressing of their complains at priority.”  Getting older is an inevitable fact in human life. Obviously, one of the most significant virtues is that we should show the gratitude and thankfulness for parent’s upbringing when we are matures enough. No doubt, our old parents devoted themselves for upbringing next generation and brought about a better standard of life for us by toiling hard. In return, it is significant to understand that they too deserve an equal care and support at this juncture when they become physically weak due to old age infirmities.

Silpi Shahu, an officer in Bank says, “The very grand people are so frail and weak even the crossing a road can become impossible for them without support.  In the olden days, most people would not move too far off from their birthplaces. Therefore, their families usually put together. Today the family unit is splitting separately because its young ones travel far and wide in search of better jobs. So the chances are that the old folks will be left alone and aloof, deserted. Sometimes they are not wanted by their job seeker children along with. They are luckier ones who may have a child or two living along with them. On the other hands, the less fortunate  people who may have to pine for their lives away in an old folks’ home or in their own empty house that was once full with the laughter of kids. This abandon is a very real problem in our society"

Some schools started to have as Grand-Parents Day. Manisha Agarwal, teacher of Primary Classes tells that declaration of Grand Parents Day has infused more thrills among children. We honour them through various activities such as giving gifts, greeting cards, story-telling by children etc in our special assembly programs. Students take this chance to express their earnest love and affection for them. Government of India has introduced National Policy on Senior Citizens 2011. Even the well-being of senior citizens is mandated in the constitution of India under Article 41. Various pension schemes, are running in different states with a view to assist them financially for example Indira Gandhi National Old age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS).  Rebate and Relief schemes are implement for senior citizens by different department such as Income Tax Department, Public Distribution Systems, Railways and Roadways, District Hospitals etc. However the need is felt do more for them. We call upon NGOs, Clubs, Private Hospitals, schools to organize free health check up camps for them at regular intervals.

                                                  EASTER CELEBRATIONS

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches, Christian believe, according to scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross.

As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial & resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Alice crafted an Easter Card with a message that was so simple, yet so true & meaningful. It said, ‘Easter brings hope, love & joy. May everybody have all the three Happy Easter!’

Easter celebrations are never complete without Easter crafts featuring bunnies, eggs & bonnets. Christian families see Easter as an opportunity to spend time with each other & making Easter crafts is a great way to do this.

“When I was young, we’d have an Easter Egghunt every spring & there would be children all over the farm. What a lovely time we used to have, taking them for a ride up & down the hill as they searched for brightly coloured Easter Eggs! It was the best time of the year for us as the little children pampered us & brought us juicy carrots to munch on. Oh, it’s so exciting to even think about it”!

Philip’s mother explained him that Eggs in general play an important role in the circle of life- they represent new life & hope. Easter is all about Jesus Christ who died on the cross for the sins of the whole world, only to rise again on the third day, victorious over sin and death. His resurrection brings us the promise of a new, eternal life- and that is what the Easter Egg stands for!”

Another great idea for filling baskets is to choose organic chocolates & sweets. Choosing products that are organic, ensure no pesticides & chemicals were sprayed on the crops during the growth & production of the crops from which the food was made.

As a Great-Grandmother I want my Easter basket to be different so I fill each egg with simple directions on how to find various items hidden throughout my house, i.e. a book, a toy, a package of gold fish, etc says Anita Wilson. The 8-year old sister helps her 2year old brother & they both have a great fun.

Easter basket for my daughter are filled with make up kit, coloured hair clips, dolls, CD’s, note pads/pens, colouring books/crayons, hair supplies, nail polish, designer lunch boxes, story books, chocolates etc, nail care items hair care items.

My kids are grown now so I didn’t want to give them baskets which would eventually be tossed. For my daughter, a pretty serving platter pilled high with “girl gifts” (makeup etc) a little candy, & Easter grass, all wrapped in cellophane with a pretty bow. For my adult son a clear cookie jar filled with a little candy, decks of cards & “guy stuff”. To get the kids in the Easter spirit my Grandma makes some bunny crowns for everyone to wear on Easter Sunday.

Hot cross Buns is a party associated with Easter. It is a sweet bread with a pinch of fruits & spices, it is traditionally eaten on Good Friday.

Career Confusion

Although “Career Confusion” is a common phenomenon it is no longer difficult to make effective career decisions. The world offers a plethora of opportunities.

Mukund Mehra, a school teacher is of the opinion that “To select the right career path it’s important to first access one’s skills and interests, keeping in mind what you enjoy, what you are good at,what kind of personality you are, and the values you hold”.He further added that after taking a good look at oneself it becomes easier for one to decide on the direction one wishes to take. Of course the next step can be to find out what kinds of opportunities are there(prevailing).

Nidhi Chauhan, a mother of  daughter pursuing education as a air hostess opines that once the decision is made regarding one’s choice of career, it becomes important for him or her to develop a career plan. The information regarding the kind of training, education and skills required to achieve the career goal can be easily gathered with some assistance. In this context, speaking to career advisors and recruitment specialists and employers can be of great help anyway. Even books can be a good source of information for choosing a career. The books often help out to get one thinking about the issues one needs to consider.

Sanjay Kapoor, a counsellor suggests that “for those who are not sure about the kind of career they want, and yet desire a qualification it will be best for them to learn skills that will be useful for the job”.Monika Kapoor , a mother of college going son says “The parents play a vital role in preparing their child to make a sound career decision”. Several studies indicate that parents are ranked as the number one influence over their child’s career choices. As a parent, one would do well to leave the final decision to the child. Of course, one may mention factors to be considered, such as, job market demand, salary ranges, long-term opportunities, skills required etc.Ridhima Khanna, a professor says, “There is no point in pushing the child towards an occupation for which he has no aptitude or motivation just because it is popular at a given time. It may not be the case a decade later.

Rajesh Sharma,an academic councellor says, “When one comes to making the decision about which career to embark upon these would be some of the issues to be reflected upon. The career is not just for himself but, also, for his family, community and his country.

According to Gaurav Bansal, an IAS, “the various factors to be considered are whether the job in question is appealing, interesting, satisfying- emotionally and financially and whether it can contribute substantially to his general well being.  “One would also do well and strengths in the backdrop of a highly competitive milieu, and the pressures and demands of the chosen career.

Apt counselling may be sought from qualified counsellors on various career choices suitable to one’s aptitude. A career, which is compatible with one’s interests and aptitudes, should also provide one with a comfortable living. Dead-end careers should be avoided at all cost. One should hunt out information about the different career choices available that have good future prospects.

The process of integrating (exploring) the information one collects about oneself and career options can certainly be a challenge. Once you’ve identified your strong preferences you will be able                                                                                                                                                                                      to strike off from your list jobs which seem uninteresting to you. Whatever it is that you learn about yourself, remember that you are making important discoveries that will help you choose the right career when the time comes.

There was a time when anyone scoring above 95% was looked at with wonder and awe. Today, that level of respect is reserved only for 98 percenters.

It is the supply-demand mismatch that threatens to destroy many promising future’s. We are a country of bright minds. There is a pressing need to set up more world class universities to accommodate all deserving candidates.

“Confusion and anxiety have been the only words in my dictionary over the past few months” says Ashima Khanna. She further added excited over the board results, nervous about the cut-offs and confused about the course, college and the admission process, we are releaved to some extent with the return of the 3 year format and re-introduction of the program. The admission list are like a shocker for most aspirations while a delight for the rest. The career loses its direction when the admission is denied by the colleges and universities.

In such a scenario, there are many students who may be thinking of other options such as taking up professional courses or may also consider going abroad for further studies

“ SAJNA HAI MUJHE SAJNA KE LIYE”

                        LONG LIVE MY HUSBAND!

Karwa Chauth is a festival of great importance for all married women as it adds to a strong foundation of love and care, between a husband and wife. TP explores the emotions and feelings of young modern females for this festival.

Karwa Chauth festival falls on the Kartik ki Chauth which means the fourth day of the wanning moon or dark fortnight of Hindu month of Kartik. This is an auspicious occasion which pays tribute to the institution of marriage as this fast is for the longevity of husband’s life and for continued marital bliss.  The important aspect of Karwa Chauth is that a dawn to dusk fast is undertaken by the married or would be married women and finally break the fast after sighting the moon. The fast is unique in itself because nowhere in this whole world does a wife go without food or water just to pray for the long life and well being of her husband. This festival has deep spiritual and religious significance.

Pragati Pandey recently married says this occasion is more important for all newly wed couples.  I experienced on my first Karwa Chauth recently that I was made to feel very special by my relatives and immediate family members on this day. I was showered with blessings for a blissful married life and loads of Karwa Chauth gifts. It was an exciting experience to be without food and water the whole day long but I am extremely thankful to my very understanding mother in law who offered me a glass of milk after evening puja keeping in view the odd circumstances I may have to face in future either due to illness or when I will be on my family way.

According to Chandni Kapoor, a dentist “this event is growing bigger and bigger with each passing day and each passing year. In modern days, we notice that this big fashion festival has turned into a full fledged event. Previously only the sweet shops, mehndi and bangle shops were found traditionally  busy on this auspicious Karwa Chauth festival. But, in recent times the beauticians at beauty parlours , the event planners and restaurant managers are joining the celebrations thus making the occasion more grand and enjoyable. One can find special eateries for the day of Karwa Chauth are gearing up in town. Most of the restaurants have special menus for this very special day. No wonder, almost all eating points in the city are offering plenty of attractive options to choose from .Different clubs have planned to organise many special events on this festival with interesting couple games, stalls and even dance competitions.

Barkha Khanna a business women says, “ with so much feasting and fun added to it fasting had never been so amazing and exciting before.” The gifts offered on this occasion by mother of the daughter like sargi and baya reflect joy, splendour, brightness and happiness of a married life.

Shivi  Taneja says ,”it is exciting to see the markets flooded with all the symbols that reflect the marriage status of a women such as jewelry, bangles, heena, sarees, lengas choli, beauty products, fashionable clothes and many other traditional gifts and one is tempted to purchase all the items of one’s choice by seeing the systematic display.”

Henna application is an age old tradition that symbolizes luck and prosperity no wonder each women takes interest in applying exclusive designs and patterns. Decorating hand and feet by creating intricate designs with henna is one of the most common tradition on this occasion . It is believed that woman who get dark colour will get a loads of love and caring from her groom. No doubt, the fast observed on Karwa Chauth adds to the rich values of self-sacrifice, social and moral principles.

Newly married Karishma Gupta says ,”in the evening after completing all the rituals, she received exquisite Karwa chauth gift from her other half.”She further adds, in loving approbation of my day long Karwa Chauth fast for him, my husband presented me with Karwa Chauth gift this year also. The gift that I received on my first Karwa Chauth last year was also grand and it become a possession for lifetime. I feel the day of Karwa Chauth develops a special kind of bond between the wife and her husband.Though we pray every day for their well being but Karwa Chauth is exclusively observed and so it has a lot of significance and importance. It is one of the most awaited gala event of every year as it generates more intimacy  and develops a strong bond between the couple to enjoy the married life.

                               TEACHER

A teacher models and teaches good character

and reflect for one another

how to focus on strengths and not on weaknesses

and how to encourage each other.

She gives the child the freedom he needs

to make choice on his own

So he learns to become more responsible

and is able to stand alone.

He’s taught to be strong and think for himself

As his soul and spirit heal.

And the puzzle that’s taking shape inside

has a much more positive feel.

The child discovers the joy that comes

from learning something new

and his vision grows as he begins

to see all the things he can do.

A picture  is formed as more pieces fit

an image of the child within

with greater strength and confidence

and a belief that yes he can win

All because a hero was there

in the heart of a teacher who cared

enabling the child become much more

than he ever imagined or ever dared.
